Try downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, alpine skiing and telemark skiing amidst the peaks of Monte Rosa.
Thanks to the new link with Valle d'Aosta, completed during the 2004-2005 winter season, Valsesia is able to offer skiers one of the most up-to-date complexes in Europe.
Skiers can now leave Alagna Valsesia (1212m) using the state-of-the-art Pianalunga – Passo dei Salati Gressoney link and ski for tens of kilometres without ever skiing down the same slope twice. In the evening they return to their accommodation to spend the night in the fairytale setting of this historic Walser region of Italy. The Alagna slope offers the legendary Balma black run as well as others classified as being of medium-to-high difficulty. The resort also offers a range of off-piste entertainment.
The scenic Mera runs with their views over the Sesia Valley have been created on gentle ridges and are suitable for all levels of ability, including children and beginners. The Mera is currently undergoing a new lease of life. With all eyes on the great Olympic events of 2006, the equipment is being updated, three new chair lifts are under construction, and a powerful artificial snow machine is being installed.
Alagna offers non-skiers a taste of life with the Walsers, the German-speaking people who occupied the upper valley in medieval times. The charming wood and stone houses and the Piedmont Walser Museum are all worth a visit, as is the San Michele parish church at Riva Valdobbia, now a national monument.
