Tourist Proposals - THE OLYMPIC MOUNTAINS … AND MORE

“The Olympic Mountains” is a 100 km ring of white gold studded with nine sparkling gems: Turin, Sauze d'Oulx, Bardonecchia, Claviere, Cesana Sansicario, Sestriere, Pragelato, Pinerolo and Torre Pellice.
Turin 2006 has been a challenge that combined sport with artistic and natural excellence. The jewel in the ring is Turin: the original capital of Italy, an extremely sophisticated Baroque city criss-crossed by twenty-seven kilometres of porticos full of museums, art centres, palaces and masterpieces of industrial architecture. An historical treasure set in a green oasis that stretches for nearly a million square metres that overlooks the mighty river Po, which rises in Piedmont, flows across northern Italy before flowing into the Adriatic. Yes, Turin 2006 offered sport but not just sport. The city also offered history and a rich industrial heritage. Art, history and technology have had a leading role in the valleys that will soon play host to the winter sports. The Susa and Pinerolo Valleys are home to 30 bell towers of great historical interest, 85 castles, towers and forts - and these days 1,000 artificial snow canons. The six hundred or more kilometres of ski runs will be complemented by the 'green spaces' of Turin 2006: five natural parks that will each play its own winning role in these winter Olympics. History forms the backdrop to winter sports, technology, state-of-the-art facilities, and more: Turin 2006 also offered the Olympics a mountain home and a climate of warmth and simplicity.

Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, freeride skiing, alpine skiing and telemark skiing between the peaks of Monte Rosa. Thanks to the link with Valle d’Aosta, completed during the 2004-2005 winter season, Valsesia now offers skiers one of the biggest resorts in Europe. Cross-country skiers visiting the valley can also enjoy the high-altitude Pianalunga track in Alagna or the Scopello ring at the foot of the historical Alpe di Mera ski station half way down the valley and just 30 minutes from Alagna.

The scenic Mera runs, with their views over the Sesia and Rosa valleys, follow gentle ridges and are suitable for all, including children and beginners.

And there's plenty more skiing to be had around Monregalese (Mondovì), between Artesina and Frabosa Soprana, Garessio, Lurisia and Pratonevoso. More than 260 kilometres of ski runs and more than seventy lifts, as well as walks of unusual beauty for those who love to ramble or just stroll in the mountains. While in the Cuneo region, we simply have to mention Limone Piemonte, a major tourist destination for skiers. In the magnificent setting of Monviso, various runs and cross-country ski trails are available for those who prefer to get away from it all.
