All lovers of walks in the mountains will find itineraries of outstanding beauty in Southern Piedmont, especially in the Monregalese area. From the Valle Pesio as far as Alta Valle Tanaro it offers a sequence of enchanting locations: the Maritime Alps. Monregalese also has a great deal to offer when it comes to skiing, with Artesina and Franosa Soprana, Garessio, Lurisia, Pratonevoso. More than 260 kilometres of pistes and more than seventy skilifts. Accommodation includes more than seven thousand beds among hotels, residences and camping sites. Monregalese is not just mountain, but culture, art, sport and nature. Monregalese is able to surprise all its visitors, in winter as in summer. A past that is full of history, and which can still be seen today. The Saracens, for example, have left signs of their presence, with look-out towers scattered across the area.
Vicoforte, on the other hand, boasts the presence of the Montis Regalis Sanctuary, with the world’s largest elliptical cupola. And you simply must not miss the Grotta di Bossea. The entire Monregalese area displays karst phenomena. Within the “temple” hall, it is possible to see the skeleton of Ursus Speleus. The whole Alta Val Tanaro area, moreover, represents an ideal location for all caving enthusiasts.
Relaxation and health, on the other hand, are guaranteed at Lurisia, renowned for its spas, which exploit the cupriferous mineral rich waters. During the summer, the springs for San Bernardo mineral water, at Garessio, become favourite meeting places.
Good cuisine is a prerogative of all the Monregalese localities; the flavours of generous, genuine cooking, a perfect expression of tradition, with dishes ranging from bolliti di Carrù, to capon di Marozzo, to superlative mountain cheeses, like Raschera, produced in the mountains that encircle Frabosa Soprana, to truffles, chestnuts and mushrooms.
Mondovì, which has always been recognised as the capital of Monregalese, has linked its name to academic studies, with the decentralised site of the University, and the renowned Istituto Alberghiero. A city that has succeeded in reconciling economic development (with major industrial sites and flourishing craftwork businesses) with tourism and commerce.
